I have taught high school for 25 years in Denver Public Schools, and my philosophy regarding teaching has remained the same. I believe Kahil Gibran says it the very best: “The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among the followers, gives not of his wisdom, but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.”
Gibran wrote this so the pronouns are not “gender neutral, nor inclusive,” but the sentiment is still “right-on” in my opinion.
I have learned far more from my students than they have ever learned from me.
